Church Planting about everything but Jesus and Church

Church Planting about everything but Jesus and Church

I got two brochures in the mail Saturday for two new “church” plants in my area, the one said on it “high-quality music and videos……. we want you to have a great experience.” If I want great music I will go to a concert, the bar down the street, or put on a Matt Redman or Eagles CD, guarantee you they are better than any band they have. If I want a good video, I have cable, a Blockbuster up the street and the AMC 20 Megaplex to go to, and my own collection of DVD’s and I can chose what I want to see.

What was Not mention is Jesus in any way shape or form, nor was worship, fellowship of the body of Christ, not even their websites mention Jesus, a lot of talk about entertainment, a laid back atmosphere, drama, multimedia, music, awesome environment and straightforward discussions about your issues, questions on life, hum, and where is Jesus I keep asking myself, isn’t church to be centered on and all about Him.

I thought this was ironic that at the same time I am writing this week about planters asking themselves Why they want to be a church planter I get these two brochures in the mail. That so prove my points in my last two blogs. This is why it is so important that the first thing a church planter must do is first define What church is, and second is Why do they want to plant a church and compare it to what Jesus said and the blueprint laid out by Him and the disciples in scripture to see if it is a match. And I would say neater of these two “church” have the right Why to plant or What church is, because what they are doing does not match Jesus’ What and Why.

You know if I just want entertainment I’ll stick to the real pros and go to Vegas or the club down the street, the live theaters downtown, because that’s is not why I gather with others as the church, to experience high-quality music, drama and videos but to experience Jesus and community with others in Jesus.

And for those who would attempt to defend them saying they are trying to reach the “un-churched” but what are they drawing people to, an entertainment center, not real church, not Jesus. Jesus said “lift Me up and I will draw men unto Me” He said “go and proclaim the gospel and make disciples”, not draw, attract them to an enertainment center and entertain them. Anyone who goes to places like these two, will ever experience Jesus, the gospel, or church, because that is not what they are offering to them, what they are doing. Because every Sunday they will not engage in worship but “high-quality music, drama and videos’ they will not have fellowship with Jesus in community but have a “great enertainment experience.” and the list goes on what they would be missing, to sum it up, church and Jesus is what everyone going there would be missing every week
